International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR), 2012

The International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR) observed on October 13 encourages every citizen and government to take part in building more disaster resilient communities and nations.

The International Day for Disaster Reduction, 2012 was celebrated with the theme Women and Girls: the (in) Visible Force of Resilience highlighting the need for women and girls to be at the forefront of reducing risk and managing the world's response to natural hazards.

Commemorating the day, ASDMA undertook various programmes at the state as well as district level. The programmes viz. workshops, public meetings, seminars, painting competition, road shows, demonstration on search and rescue methods etc. had been undertaken involving women from all the sectors. In the district level, it was celebrated through 24 districts of Assam.

In the state level, ASDMA organized a workshop in collaboration with Inter Agency Group attended by Ms.Jeroo Master, Chief Field Officer, UNICEF, SmtiJahnabiGoswami, AACS, WaheedaRahman, IGSSS and Dr.Sabera Islam, Principal, K.C Das Commerce College.

The workshop was attended by 130 participants from Inter Agency Group (IAG) and the Partner NGOs viz. UNICEF, CARITAS, IGGS, CRS, Indian Red Cross Society, MMM, NEN and Ashadeep; Academic institutions viz. TISS & OKD; Colleges viz. K. C.Das Commerce College &Dispur College; and Schools viz. Sankardev Academy, Panbazar High School, TC Girls School and Junior Red Cross School.

One of the significant features of the workshop was the registration of women volunteers who pledged to make their city safe from disasters.

A demonstration on the basic Search, Rescue and First Aid techniques was carried out by a team of Women Master Trainers, Civil Defence and Home Guard. ASDMA also flagged off a Street play on the theme which was demonstrated in five places of Guwahati city.
